First Lady Michelle Obama booed at NASCAR event in Miami
HOMESTEAD — NASCAR fans booed First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, before the start of the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Obama and Biden served as Ford 400 Grand Marshals, where they addressed the drivers’ meeting Sunday afternoon before presiding over the ceremonial starting of the engines for Sunday's race.
The First Lady and Biden were invited to the season-ending event to bring awareness to their Joining Forces initiative, which supports military families. Obama and Biden attended a special barbeque lunch with service members and their families in advance of giving the “Gentlemen, start your engines” order for the 3:20 p.m. race. As they performed that function, boos could be prominently heard before the roar of the engines.
