FL Prepaid will side with state in BOG tuition suit
Florida Prepaid College Board chairman Ted Hoepner just told the Buzz his organization will enter the tuition-setting fray pending in a Leon County courtroom, should the judge allow the case to proceed.
“We've been sort of on the sidelines watching, but we will enter into that lawsuit in support of the Legislature," Hoepner said. He said he's waiting to hear the judge's ruling on whether former Gov. Bob Graham, the Board of Governors and other plaintiffs have legal standing to challenge the Legislature over tuition-setting power.
The judge ruled recently that the parties didn't, but they refiled their complaint yesterday.
"We have at Prepaid a mandate to help people maintain an affordable college education," Hoepner said. "So we’re arguing for a rational, modest increase over time for tuition."
The Board of Governors wants to raise tuition more steeply to go from the bottom to at least the top of the fourth quartile nationwide.
