Florida House approves business tax cut

The Republican-led Florida House just approved its first substantial bill of the session: a tax cut for businesses that is paid for by reducing unemployment benefits.

The bill (HB 7005) was approved, 81-38. It would cut business taxes by reducing the number of weeks out-of-work Floridians can receive the maximum payment of $275. Rep. Dwayne Taylor of Daytona Beach was the only Democrat to vote for the bill, but he later changed it to a 'no' vote. A spokesman for the Democratic caucus said Taylor accidentally voted for the bill.

It also sets up a showdown with the Senate, where its overhaul of unemployment compensation does not include the cut to benefits. That bill (SB 728) has another committee hearing before it can be debated on the Senate floor.
