Florida lawmakers share in the joy of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' return to the House
Already awash in emotion in the debt-ceiling debate, the U.S. House burst into cheers this evening when Rep. Gabrielle Giffords appeared to cast her vote in favor of the compromise bill.
For the moment, the House was united. At her side was Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who later said: "This is a day for the history books. We saved our country from going into default and my beloved friend and ever optimistic colleage Rep. Gabrielle Giffords returned to the floor to cast her vote in favor of the the future of our nation."
Other Florida lawmakers expressed their joy at seeing Giffords, who was shot in the head in January during a constituent event in Tucson, Ariz.
"So great to see Rep. Gabby Giffords voting tonight," tweeted Rep. Gus Bilirakis of Palm Harbor. His hashtag: #WelcomeBackGabby
Rep. Vern Buchanan of Sarasota tweeted, "It was absolutely incredible to see my friend and colleague Rep. Gabby Giffords return to the House floor this evening."
