Florida snake tragedy could aid Nelson
The nightmarish story of a python strangling a 2-year-old Florida girl has given Sen. Bill Nelson fresh, if unfortunate, ammo in his quest for an import ban on the snakes.
Nelson plans to highlight the case tomorrow morning before a Senate environmental subcommittee looking at invasive species. The Florida Democrat filed his bill in February (U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, D-Miami, sponsored the companion) and followed it with a trip to the Everglades, where the Burmese pythons have proliferated. Below, an Everglades park ranger holds a 10-foot snake captured in 2003.
