Florida's unemployment rate falls to lowest level since 2009
Florida's unemployment rate fell substantially to 10.8 percent in April, reaching the lowest level in 19 months.
The state added 14,900 jobs over the month, pushing the estimated number of unemployed below 1 million for the first time since October, 2009. The 10.8 percent rate reflects about 996,000 jobless out of a labor force of 9.2 million.
The state's jobless rate, down from 11.1 percent in March, has steadily improved since peaking at a modern-era record 12 percent in December. However, Florida still suffers from one of the highest unemployment rates in the country and is substantially above the U.S. rate of 9 percent.
