Former Senate President Phil Lewis, 82, has died

Phil Lewis of West Palm Beach, a respected and outspoken president of the Florida Senate from 1978-1980, died at home Sunday following a brief illness. He was 82.

A real estate executive and native of Omaha, Neb., Lewis was a founding father of Florida TaxWatch. A plain-spoken Democrat, he served in a wide variety of posts including the state Board of Regents and an election reform task force created by former Gov. Jeb Bush after the 2000 presidential recount. Services are pending.
