FreedomWorks to endorse Connie Mack, lend grassroots muscle
Connie Mack's refusal to debate his GOP primary opponents may offend some activists, but the front-runner is about to get a big grassroots boost.
FreedomWorks will endorse Mack in the morning.
"Democrat Bill Nelson is sitting on about $10,000,000, enough to attack and destroy his Republican challenger as soon as the Republican primary is held," reads an e-mail FreedomWorks PAC will send to more than 102,000 Florida members. "We can’t wait until then to decide who the right candidate is to beat him. Every day we wait is another day Bill Nelson gets further ahead."
In addition to signaling its preference, FreedomWorks provides candidates with yard signs, door hangers and other get out the vote materials. Candidates also get put into its national phone banking system. People from Ohio, for example, could be making calls on Mack's behalf.
FreedomWorks had endorsed Adam Hasner, but Hasner weeks ago bailed on the race to run for a U.S. House seat. The Mack endorsement came after a conference call with nearly 100 Florida grassroots activists and a review of Mack's record.
"Of course, the beauty of democracy is that everyone is free to have their own opinions," the email reads. "There are several candidates in the Florida Senate race and different people will see different merits in each. Our experience tells us that what matters most—what prevents us from getting burned—is focusing on the candidate’s record, not their rhetoric, or how they makes us feel. What matters for the country is how they will vote and the best predictor of future action is past action."
