The Freewheelin' Bob Graham

September

Bob Graham spent the past three days on the trail with Jim Davis and quite obviously relished the opportunity: busting reporters’ chops, calling into radio programs and Giuseppe1giving a fascinating dissertation on the Everglades. He also helped break down a wall with the candidate.

After a day of campaigning Friday, the press van pulled into a plaza in Jupiter, right behind Graham and his wife, Adele. Davis, who spent an hour in the van, started to head off. But Graham poked his head in and invited everyone to dine with him. Off we went, into Giuseppe’s Italian Restaurant.

Graham bounced around the room, asking the staff switch the TV to the Marlins game, shaking hands and helping pick out a bottle of wine, Montpellier cabernet sauvignon, vintage 2003. “Your lips touch that wine, career over,” he kidded Davis. Adele Graham told Davis his wife had been detained at the airport for having lotion with her, a violation of the new flying rules. She had him - for a minute.

The mood infected Davis. He walked into the kitchen to greet the staff, signed autographs, told his own jokes. Over a slice of pepperoni, he told stories about Al Gore (innocuous as they were, he insisted on being off the record.) Davis picked up at least one vote – if he can get past the primary. Owner Constantine DeRosa, a Republican, said Davis’ ideas on insurance gave him hope. “He’s a good guy,” DeRosa said.
