Fugate goes to Washington
Craig Fugate, Florida's director of emergency management and President Obama's pick to head FEMA, was spied schmoozing senators in the U.S. Capitol today, a ritual for nominees who need Senate confirmation.
At one point Buzz saw him in consult with Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., a member of the Homeland Security and Government Reform Committee, on a pair of leather couches in a marble hallway outside the Senate chamber.
Carper excused himself briefly to vote.
"So," Buzz asked, "how's he doing?
"Dead on arrival," Carper dead-panned. Then he laughed. "Kidding, I'm kidding," before adding they had just gotten started.
Fugate, wearing a dark suit and tie, his ID dangling from a blue and orange Florida Gators lanyard, was shepherded about by several aides. His Senate confirmation hearing has not yet been scheuled, and in keeping with tradition Fugate had little to say about his visit so far.
"Just walking around," he said.
