Gallagher V. Crist
A viewers guide to tonight's Republican debate is here. Some suggested bets for those watching at home: Does Gallagher mention his wife, kid and mortgage more than five times? Does Crist say anything that wouldn't fit on a bumper sticker? Does Gallagher try to pin down Crist on how he'll play for class size reduction? Does Crist query Gallagher about his old advocacy of abortion rights, gun control or tax increases?
Gallagher is used to debating on TV at WEDU. He did it in 1994 against Jeb Bush, Ken Connor, Ander Crenshaw, and Jim Smith. From the clips: "State Sen. Ander Crenshaw of Jacksonville worked hard to distinguish himself as the most anti-tax Republican by asking Gallagher and Jim Smith about their proposals to raise taxes or change the tax structure. He never got clear answers. The men wallowed in some insider talk about past tax fights in the Legislature until Bush interrupted.
"Talking about taxes if off the point. The point is that we spend too much," Bush said."
