Gambling a big deal at legislative black caucus event

18

November

The Florida Conference of Black State Legislators is meeting this weekend at the Buena Vista Palace hotel near Walt Disney World, and the subject of gambling is taking center stage, with presentations on the destination resort legislation and Internet cafes. The event will end Saturday with a trip to the Citrus Bowl for the game between Bethune Cookman and Florida A&M University.

The lineup of speakers includes Colin Au, president of Genting Americas, the firm pushing legislation in Tallahassee to create three mega-resorts in Florida, and lobbyists Scott Dick of the SKD Consulting Group and Yolanda Jackson of the Becker Poliakoff law firm on the issue of Internet cafes, which offer slot machine-style games. Some legislators and law enforcement officials want to prohibit the cafes, which have proliferated in strip shopping centers across the state.

The agenda for the two-day event lists as "meeting supporters" Genting LLC, Las Vegas Sands, International Internet Technologies, Pompano Park Racing & Isles of Capri, Mardi Gras and Florida No Casinos. Other panel discussions focus on health care, small business owners and the social status of black men and boys.

The full conference agenda and list of sponsors is posted below.
