Genting weighs in pre-primary with mega checks

13

August

Genting's political check writers, who had taken a bit of a break since the legislative session ended without passing their casino resort legislation, have been busy since the last week of July. The Malaysian-based casino giant has written a whopping $431,000 in campaign contributions since July 16, during the run-up to the primary.

The largest chunk of money -- $189,000 -- went to the company's newly formed political committee as it prepares to put a constitutional amendment on the November 2014 ballot.  (Presumably they are pollingni ballot language to give to petition gatherers on election day.) The rest of it went to mega contributions to the political committees of some key legislative players such as Sens. Jack Latvala and Joe Negron. Who is the Republican to watch in the casino-resistant House? Jason Brodeur of Sanford.

Here's our list from both Genting's coffers and Bayfront Development LLC, Genting's Miami-based development company:

* $70,000 to the Republican Party of Florida

* $50,000 to the Democratic Party of Florida

* $40,000 to the Florida Conservative Action Committee run by Sen. Joe Negron, R-Stuart

* $20,000 to the Florida Leadership Fund run by Sen. Jack Latvala, R-St. Petersburg

* $20,000 to Citizens for Enterprising Democracy run by Rep. Jason Brodeur, R-Sanford

* $20,000 to Citizens First, an electioneering organization run by Genting lawyer and political consultant, John French

* $10,000 to Committee for a Prosperous Florida run by Sen. Jeremy Ring, D-Margate

* $5,000 to The Future is Now, Coral Gables-based electioneering organization run by Francis Suarez and Jose "Pepe" Riesco, allies of Lincoln Diaz Balart, the former congressman and now a Genting consultant.

* $5,000 to Citizens for Common Sense run by Rep. Daryl Rouson, D-St. Petersburg

* $2,500 to Alliance for Progressive Representation run by Rep. Perry Thurston, D-Fort Lauderdale.
