Getting rid of that pesky gift ban

SiplinIt's finally happened. Sen. Gary Siplin, D-Orlando, has done what many lawmakers have talked privately about trying -- mostly in jest -- ever since Senate President Tom Lee left the Legislature.

His bill, SB 2836, would get rid the gift ban, and also all the requirements forcing lobbyists to complete compensation reports. The bill has no companion in the House and was assigned to four committees in the Senate on Thursday. But you never know.

Update: Sen. Al Lawson and Rep. Loranne Ausley also have a more narrowly defined repeal of a part of the gift ban, allowing lawmakers to accept less than $20 worth of food or beverages at events, where information or education is provided.
