GOP House candidate: Sansom must resign
A Republican candidate for an open House seat in Pinellas County is calling on Rep. Ray Sansom to resign from the Legislature. Fabian Calvo says Sansom "has violated the trust of the people of Florida and has cast a cloud over the Republican Party in the state of Florida."
Calvo has launched a petition drive and is challenging all other Republicans, both candidates and incumbents, to join in demanding that Sansom step down. Read Calvo's news release here. Sansom, a former House speaker from Destin, is awaiting trial on charges of perjury and falsifying official documents in connection with his handling of $6 million in public money for a college project that allegedly benefited a political benefactor, real estate developer Jay Odom. Odom and former college president Bob Richburg also face charges.
Calvo, of Clearwater, owns a management company and is active in the local Chamber of Commerce, NRA and NFIB. He is one of three Republican candidates for the District 45 seat that is being vacated by Tom Anderson of Dunedin. The others are Kathryn Elizabeth Starkey and Richard Corcoran.
