Gov. Scott testifies before House committee on bill to create new Dept. of Economic Opportunity

April

In his first ever committee appearance, Gov. Rick Scott testified before the House Select Committee on Government Reorganization on behalf of a bill to create a Department of Economic Opportunity under his control. Scott spoke for about three minutes at the start of the meeting.

"Thank your for taking economic developoment seriously," he told the committee, pointing out that 1 million Floridians are out of work. "We were all elected to do one thing: Make Florida the best place to start, grow or bring a business. That way we will give businesses  what they need to create private sector jobs. This bill you will vote on today will create the framework we need."

Scott said when he requested creation of department he wanted three things: To bring together economic development and workforce development, to create a single point of contact for public/private partnerships, and flexibility in funding to allow fast reaction to business opportunities.

"The bill this committee will vote on today delivers those three things," Scott said. "With those changes, Florida will be able to compete and win."

Among other things, he said, the bill will allow businesses to receive incentives in 10 days, and eliminates duplication of efforts.

"With a single economic development agency, I am confident we will get Florida back to work," he said.
