Governors build up Obama criticism at convention

One governor after another took to the stage Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention in Tampa with variations on the theme that Republicans are good fiscal stewards and President Barack Obama has failed to revive the economy.

The evening's theme, "We Built It," was a riff on an Obama phrase: "If you've got a business, you didn't build that." Republicans consider Obama's phrase insulting and Democrats say Republicans distorted the president's point -- that successful businesses benefit from government programs or services.

As the lights dimmed, Obama's words filled the Tampa Bay Times Forum, followed by small business owners criticizing his words.

Gov. John Kasich of Ohio: "The national debt is the sword of Damocles hanging over our children's heads, and President Obama is doing nothing about it."

Gov. Mary Fallin of Oklahoma: "The president believes the government is responsible for our successes. That's why his solution to everything is more government."

They were followed by Govs. Bob McDonnell of Virginia, Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Brian Sandoval of Nevada nd Nikki Haley of South Carolina.

Other speakers pushed a message questioning Obama's Americanism. Republican National Chairman Reince Priebus said Obama "looks down on free enterprise," and "has a problem with the American dream," and actress Janine Turner said "Obama is stifling the American dream precisely because it is not his dream."
