Groups urges Gov. Scott to bag Rick Perry prayer event

The Humanists of of Florida Association this week sent a letter to Gov. Rick Scott requesting that he pass up an invitation from Texas Gov. Rick Perry to attend a Day of Prayer and Fasting called "The Response" on Aug. 6.

In a letter sent in mid-May, Perry invited all the nation's governors to join him for the "non-denominational, apolitical, Christian prayer meeting hosted by the American Family Association at Reliant Stadium in Houston."

So will Scott attend? Mabye. "Governor Scott's schedule for August hasn't been confirmed yet," said spokesman Lane Wright.

Gov. Scott did, however, heed a request made by Perry in that same letter that his fellow governors issue a proclamation on May 23 "calling upon your constituents to join us in payer for our nation on August 6." Scott issued just such a proclamation on May 23.

"The Humanists of Florida supports freedom of religion and worship for all private citizens," said EllenBeth Wachs, the group's president in a news release. "The governor, however, is acting as an elected official when issuing proclamations, and thus he is supposed to represent all of the people. Furthermore, we sincerely hope that Governor Scott makes the right decision and does not attend Rick Perry's Revival."
