Haridopolos: Budget cuts more pressing than Rick Scott's tax cuts

Senate President Mike Haridopolos in his afternoon press conference today:

"I'm waiting to see his budget just like you are," Haridopolos said of Gov. Rick Scott's plan to cut property and corporate income taxes. "We don't have any plans for tax cuts at this point.

"There's not going to be a tax increase," he said. "If we see some opportunities for tax relief that we feel absolutely confident will create more jobs and actually grow the economy, we're open to them. At this point we are struggling so much with a $3.5 billion shortfall that tax cuts are not part of our equation at point."

Scott's 7-7-7 jobs plan calls for a $1.4 billion cut to property taxes this year and doubling that over seven years. The campaign promise also would phase phase out the corporate income tax, including a first-year rate cut from 5.5 percent to 3 percent. That first-year reduction would cost another $835 million.
