Hawkes getting 'Red Queen' treatment, attorney says

The lawyer for 1st District Court of Appeal Judge Paul M. Hawkes compares a Judicial Qualifications Commission prosecutor with Alice in Wonderland’s “Red Queen,’’ pronouncing sentence first, verdict later in the latest round of an escalating war of words. Tallahassee lawyer Ken Sukhia says Hawkes is being “railroaded’’ with discourteous and high-handed behavior from a “politically vindictive process.’’ Sukhia made the accusations in a brief filed Friday with the Florida Supreme Court. Hawkes is charged with misconduct in connection with the construction of a posh new courthouse many are calling a “Taj Mahal.’’ Hawkes denies any wrongdoing and says all 15 judges at the court participated in decisions that resulted in a $50-million courthouse filled with granite and mahogany. The JQC could recommend discipline or removal from office after a trial which is expected to occur later this year. --Lucy Morgan
