Health care companies gearing up for Medicaid managed care

February

With the Florida legislature on the verge of directing the state's Medicaid patients into managed care programs, the Florida Association of Health Plans is launching a campaign to make sure they go that route. Dubbed "Knowledge Is Key," it features a series of videos on the website www.knowledgeiskey.org and www.sayfiereview.com.

In a news conference about the campaign, FAHP president Michael Garner and Amerigroup Florida CEO Bill McHugh, Jose Gonzales from Associated Industries of Florida and Dominic Calabro of Florida TaxWatch talked about how health care plans provide quality care and could save taxpayers money if Medicaid patients were in those plans.  The speakers rejected suggestions that the point of the video series is to lobby for moving the state's Medicaid users to HMOs, saying it's just an educational campaign intended to spark dialogue. But clearly, they stand to gain from any potential contracts.

"We don't intend this to be a policy campaign at all," Garner said. The only goal, he said, is to show the good work the companies do and educate people -- largely policy makers -- about that good work.

The video series highlights patients who are pleased-as-punch with the treatment they're getting through health insurance companies. Companies showcased include AmeriGroup, United Healthcare, AvMed and WellCare.
