He'll Pay Cash

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson proved his fund-raising prowess again for the latest campaign finance reporting period, collecting $1.2-million for his reelection bid from Aug. 17 to Sept. 30, according to documents due this week.

But, for a change, he also spent big: With TV ads running throughout the state, his expenditures for the same six weeks amounted to almost $6.3-million. He also gave $250,000 to the Florida Democratic Party.

That leaves him with $6.8-million in the bank for the final three weeks.

Nelson, an Orlando Democrat, is being challenged by Rep. Katherine Harris, R-Longboat, Key. She once promised to inject $10-million of her own money into her campaign, but as yet has only sunk in $3-million.

The fund-raising reports must be sent to the U.S. Senate and postmarked by this morning. That means they'll be available for public inspection by about Thursday. Nelson's campaign complied with a request to make them available this morning. No word yet from the Harris camp.
