Hillary Clinton calls on LeMieux
Sen. George LeMieux was hurrying back to his office a short while ago to get a call from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who will presumably ask him to release his hold of the administration's nominee for ambassador to Brazil.
But LeMieux said he first wants a commitment that democratic ideas will be promoted throughout Latin America and a return to normal relations with Honduras. "In terms of Cuba, I want to make sure the Cuban regime is not filtering the aid we give to nongovernmental organizations."
He added, "I want to make sure that the State Department knows I have an eagle eye on these issues."
LeMieuxhas put procedural hold on Tom Shannon, former assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere Affairs, citing a more open posture toward the Castro regime. Critics, however, say LeMieux's move is a political ploy that is hurting relations with Latin America.
