House Democrats still feeling shut out
House Democrats are feeling no love whatsoever from the Republican majority on the closed-door nature of budget talks.
On the House floor Friday morning, Rep Ron Saunders, D-Key West, said he asked House budget negotiator Dean Cannon about the status of budget talks. "That's for us to know and for you to find out," Cannon replied, according to Saunders (Cannon was unavailable). He added: "According to Dean, there's no deal." Saunders said Sen. Steve Wise, R-Jacksonville, who oversees the K-12 education budget in the Senate, stopped by the House. "No way to close out (the budget)?" Saunders said he asked Wise. "No," the senator answered.
UPDATE: Cannon, through a spokesman, said Saunders got it wrong. According to Cannon, Saunders' query was whether leadership needed Democratic votes to pass a cigarette tax increase, not about bdget negotiations.
