Howard Troxler on extending term limits: 'It's hard to argue ... that we would do much worse'
With state Rep. Rick Kriseman, D-St. Petersburg, and state Sen. Mike Bennett, R-Bradenton, leading a bipartisan proposal to lengthen term limits, Times columnist Howard Troxler today writes about why it might not be such a bad idea:
Sure, it's easy to say that politicians should have shorter terms, not longer. And yet, even many supporters of the eight-year limits that took effect in 2000 grudgingly admit they've done more harm than good. Term limits have "worked" in exactly one sense: producing more inexperienced, weak Florida legislators on average, while giving more power to insiders and special interests.
