The I-Candidate

Add one more politico to the list of those talking insurance on the campaign trail: Milt Bauguess, a little-known Republican candidate for CFO.

Baugess, well-known in Tallahassee circles and a licensed security dealer, is pitching his entire campaign on being the one candidate who has actually sold insurance and can talk to insurance companies, unlike his Republican opponents, homebuilder Tom Lee and Randy Johnson, who heads Central Florida's Sports Commission, and Democratic candidate and retired banker Alex Sink.

His idea, which he acknowledged is not fully formed during a Tallahassee press conference Friday, is to have the insurance companies write policies covering damage from just Category 1, 2, and 3 hurricanes and leave a state system, funded before the hurricane, for covering category 4 or 5 hurricanes. Where would the money come from? Perhaps an expanded bed tax or homeowner's assessments. Baugess said he's not yet sure.

Buzz notes his plan is the inverse of legislative Democrats, who have suggested the state cover the first $100,000 in windstorm losses and the insurance industry pick up the rest.
