It's half over

June

Empty The Florida Senate adjourned sine die at 6 p.m. Thursday with the House slogging through the last few hopeless-cause amendments to a proposed constitutional amendment expanding the homestead exemption. "Have a nice summer!" Senate President Ken Pruitt told senators as an overhead TV screen overhead showed Rep. Carl Domino, R-Jupiter, debating a point. Tired of waiting, senators adjourned.

The clumsy conclusion to the abbreviated three-day session robbed lawmakers of the iconic image of the celebratory joint hanky drop in the Capitol rotunda in time for 6 p.m. local TV news live shots. In addition, the debate degenerated in the House after Republicans used a parliamentary move to stifle debate on a Democratic amendment. A deserted lectern, filled with microphones, awaited a throng of self-congratulatory lawmakers.
