It's official: Lakeland Polytechnic as 12th university clears Legislature
Here's the vote in the House. At 8:46 p.m., JD Alexander got his wish. By a vote of 86-31, the House approved splitting USF-Polytechnic from USF. In exchange, USF got much of its funding back that Alexander had previously slashed.
Alexander didn't get all Republicans to support his push for the state's 12th university. In an earlier Senate vote, Paula Dockery, Lakeland; Steve Oelrich, Gainesville; and Mike Fasano, New Port Richey gave a thumbs down on big government spending.
In the House, four more Republicans voted no: Matt Gaetz, Fort Walton Beach (breaking from his dad, incoming Senate President Don Gaetz); Richard Glorioso, Plant City; Paige Kreegel, Punta Gorda; and John Tobia, Melbourne.
Several Democrats voted for the bill, but that's because by now, with the funding restored, USF is no longer opposing the split.
Over to you, Gov. Scott.
