Former state Rep. Dudley Goodlette, a well-respected Republican from Naples, is expected to be named as the new chief of staff to House Speaker Larry Cretul.

Goodlette most recently served as an adviser to the Taxation and Budget Reform Commission, which was chaired by his friend, former Speaker Allan Bense.

Reached moments ago, Goodlette said he could not confirm the news, but said he has had conversations with Cretul. Goodlette, a lawyer, served in the Legislature from 1998 to 2006. He would replace Mike Hansen, who served under embattled speaker Ray Sansom.
