Jeff Greene says he beat Bill Gates on 'billionaire challenge'
Jeff Greene today told the Buzz that he has pledged "more than half" of his wealth to charity, and that he did well before Bill Gates and Warren Buffett began formally asking the nation's billionaires to do so.
"I made that commitment long, long before they ever did that idea, in my estate planning. The worst thing I think a wealthy person can do is to curse his child with enormous wealth and no drive to get anything done on his own," said Greene, who has a young son.
While Gates and Buffett have actively spread their wealth, Greene said his plan is for after he dies. He and his wife did start a charitable foundation with $10 million. Still, he is not listed among the billionaires who have accepted Gates' "giving pledge."
Greene is worth $1.4 billion, according to Forbes.
