Josh Romney drops by dad's Tampa campaign office

TAMPA -- About 30 campaign staffers huddled in Mitt Romney's headquarters in Harbour Island to listen to one of the candidate's five sons give a pep talk this morning.

"I know he'll try hard to repay you by trying to set this country back on track," said Josh Romney, 36, the third oldest son of the presumptive GOP nominee.

It was a brief talk to a friendlier audience than the one filled with Ron Paul supporters that booed him off stage in May at the Arizona Republican Party convention. Josh joked about life on the campaign trail, mentioning how he felt while stumping in cold Alaska after learning another brother was campaigning in Hawaii.

"I thought I was the favorite son," he said. "Then I found out I was coming to Florida, and that's when the tropical storm hits."

He has 6,400 followers on Twitter @joshromney, where he tweeted that his June 21 appearance with his four brothers on Conan O'Brien was "the thrill of a lifetime." They told the comedian that they tried talking their dad out of running. But today, Josh said the entire family supports their father's latest attempt for the White House.

"He told me he didn't want me to campaign for him," Josh Romney said. "But this was a family thing. We couldn't let him do it alone."

He was introduced by state Rep. James Grant, R-Tampa, who also had a father (former state Sen. John Grant) in politics.

"It's fun to see a son out stumping for his father," Grant said.

The family ties didn't end there. Also making an appearance was Drew Weatherford, former starting quarterback for Florida State University. Now working for a public relations firm in Tampa, Weatherford is the brother of incoming House Speaker Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel.

"I let (Will) take care of his own business," said Drew, 27. "He's older and wiser."

As for Romney, Drew Weatherford said he "definitely supports him." He doesn't have an official role with the Romney campaign, but hopes to volunteer.
