For judge, Crist picks a fellow 'Pike'
In politics, you remember the people who helped you. Meet the newest member of the Florida judiciary: Broward County Judge John "Jay" Hurley, a lawyer in Fort Lauderdale known for his ownership of a big antique fire truck that's a fixture in local parades.
As the governor's press release notes, Hurley, 47, is a U.S. Navy veteran and graduate of Florida State University, but that only begins to explain his connection to the governor. Like Crist, Hurley is a "Pike," a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at FSU. As reported at the time, he was one of the brothers active in Crist's 2006 campaign, raising money and volunteering at a phone bank. And at left, courtesy of the fraternity's web site, is a photo of Crist and other Pikes (that's Hurley, second from right). "You kind of feel obligated, but in a good way," Hurley said of giving money to Crist's campaign in 2006.
