Justice's Grassroots

Seriously lagging his Republican counterparts Kim Berfield and Frank Farkas in raising campaign money for the state senate district 16 race, Democrat Charlie Justice has always touted his strong grassroots operation. So some of us political watchers were a little surprised that Justice didn't show off his field operation by qualifying for the ballot by gathering signatures on petition.

"It was always our intention to qualify via the fee," Justice told the Times last week.

Funny, because the e-mail we saw from Justice campaign manager Mitch Kates - asking for more volunteers to help Justice qualify by petition - left us with the impression the campaign was trying hard to gather enough signatures. "We can get this done...we just need more bodies involved!" Kates wrote.
