Karen Thurman speaks on primary
Letter to Democrats in advance of a 3 p.m. news conference: Story here.
I'm writing to inform you of an announcement that your Florida Democratic Party will make today in Broward County, where there are more Democrats than anywhere else in the state.
After months of careful deliberations, your Party's leaders have chosen overwhelmingly to reaffirm our strong commitment to fully participating in the state-run Democratic Presidential Primary on January 29, 2008, despite the penalties from the Democratic National Committee.
There will be no other primary. Florida Democrats absolutely must vote on January 29th. We make this election matter. Not the DNC, not the delegates, not the candidates, but Florida Democrats like you and me voting together. We make it count.
Don't let anybody call this vote a "beauty contest" or a "straw poll." On January 29, 2008, there will be a fair and open election in Florida, which will provide for maximum voter participation. The nation will be paying attention, and Florida Democrats will have a major impact in determining who the next President of the United States of America will be.
The Primary isn't the only thing on the January 29th ballot. The results of the constitutional amendment referendum and municipal races will affect you locally - your schools, your safety and your homes.
The Party has set up a website, www.MakeItCountFlorida.com, that I hope will answer any questions you may have about the Primary. There's a lot of information there. You can even order a bumper sticker for your car so whether you're cruising down 95 or stuck in traffic on the I-4, you'll always be helping to remind other Democrats to "Make It Count" on January 29th.
If you're in South Florida today and would like to join me and many other Democrats at the official announcement, please come to the Southwest Focal Point Senior Center, 301 NW 103rd Avenue in Pembroke Pines at 2:45 p.m. We'd love to have you stand with us.
The Florida Democratic Party is proud to support the right to vote and have that vote counted. We are also proud that we took the time to consider all of our options thoroughly so we could make an informed and responsible decision.
America faces such great challenges at this moment in time. Florida Democrats need to continue building our capacity at the local level so we can elect a Democratic President on November 4, 2008. I know the Primary debate has been emotional for many people, but now it's time to move forward.
Let's remain united as Democrats because when we stick together, we win.
And we've got to win big in 2008. The country needs us.
Congresswoman Karen L. Thurman
Chairwoman, Florida Democratic Party
