Kendrick Meek's tough road and what happens if Jeff Greene wins

22

July

Regardless of how much stock one puts in that PPP poll, Kendrick Meek and his supporters have to be thrilled at the 28-25 dead heat with Jeff Greene. Meek has not spent a dime on TV and he's edging out a candidate who has spent about $7-million. Could it be a sign that Greene simply is not especially appealing on TV?

But one can't overstate the challenge Meek has over the next few weeks. He said he had about $4-million on hand at the end of June, but roughly $1.2-million of that can't be spent until the general election. Between the direct mail he's spent and his campaign overhead, it's safe to assume Meek has about $2.5-million available for the final 4 1/2 weeks of the campaign. It costs about $1.3-million for a solid week of statewide advertising. Ouch.

And what happens if Greene wins? Meek told me a couple weeks ago it would be unlikely he would endorse Greene if he won and it's a certainty plenty of Meek allies will get behind Crist rather than Greene.

There has been considerable speculation that national and state Democratic leaders might actually back Charlie Crist, at least tacitly, rather than Greene. But if Greene writes a big check to the state party and/or DSCC bygones certainly could be bygones. This week we saw DSCC Chairman Robert Menendez say he would support Greene and Harry Reid try to knock down the talk of him cozying up with Crist. Could be fascinating to watch.
