Kriseman: End 'cryonyism' and hold special elections for U.S. Senate vacancies
Sen. Paula Dockery, R-Lakeland, and Rep. Rick Kriseman, D-St. Petersburg, have filed legislation stripping the governor from the ability to appoint a temporary U.S. senator, as Charlie Crist did with George LeMieux.
"The recent past has proven that the appointment process is flawed, allowing for too much cronyism," Kriseman said. "The people should decide, not one person. Further there is no reason we should treat U.S. Senate vacancies any different than U.S. House vacancies, and passing this legislation will give us a head start on what will soon be a federal mandate to do so."
