Lawmakers try again to make sex with animals illegal

The hype didn't match reality as a Senate committee today approved a bill to make bestiality illegal in Florida.

The legislation is a no-brainer: allowing a third-degree felony charge for anyone who has sex with animals. But it dissolved into ridiculous proportions last year when Miami Democratic Sen. Larcenia Bullard asked this now-legendary question: “People are taking these animals as their husbands? What’s husbandry?” (The bill exempts normal animal rearing practices.)

But Bullard is not on the Senate Criminal Justice Committee and no other lawmakers appeared willing to best her performance. So the bill, which died in the House last year, passed with no discussion. The crowd -- reporters included -- appeared disappointed.
