LeMieux, Nelson split votes on defense bill that includes hate crime protection for gays
Sen. George LeMieux voted against and Sen. Bill Nelson voted for the $680 billion defense policy bill that includes an expansion of the federal hate crime law to include attacks based on sexual orientation.
Neither lawmaker has yet issued a statement on the bill, which President Barack Obama intends to sign. The bill passed by a vote of 68-29. The House passed the defense bill earlier this month.
LeMieux had previously touted funding for Mayport Naval Station at Jacksonville, which was included in the bill.
UPDATE: Nelson says, "We are on the way to bringing a nuclear carrier to Mayport."
