Lone open Pinellas house seat gets first candidate
In a state election cycle that may be short on drama here, the race to succeed state Rep. Frank Peterman, D-St. Petersburg, may be the most combative Pinellas contest in 2008. The Rev. Charles S. McKenzie Jr. becomes the first candidate officially in the race.
Mckenzie, an educator, state coordinator of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and a one-time Democratic congressional candidate in U.S. House District 13, said Wednesday he is uniquely qualified having lived and worked throughout the four-county gerrymandered Democratic district. Peterman, of course, is term limited out of the seat he has held since 2000.
St. Petersburg City Council member Earnest Williams, who flirted with a run in 2006, is widely believed to also be interested.
