Lt. Gov. Gelber?

Ask folks on both sides of the aisle in Tallahassee about the sharpest Democratic legislators, and the most consistent answers are state Rep. Dan Gelber and state Sen. Rod Smith. So we asked Gelber, the incoming House minority leader, when he stopped in to see the Times editorial board about the prospects of accepting a running mate nod (he's endorsed Smith and says nice things about Davis):

"Would I rule it out? No. Whatever's best for the party, I'd do,'' the former federal prosecutor said, quickly suggesting plenty of other names - Miami-Dade State Attorney Kathy Fernandez Rundle, Miami-Dade Democratic chairman Jimmy Morales, former state Sen. Daryl Jones of Miami, and state Rep. Chris Smith - would be great picks.
