Macks, CFO Atwater talk jobs, housing, Rick Scott

The Macks may not always disagree at home, but they do when they’re sitting on a panel.

U.S. Senate candidate Connie Mack and California Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack appeared Tuesday afternoon with Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater on an economic development luncheon on Harbour Island, just above Jackson’s restaurant.

How to solve unemployment? Cut taxes, reduce spending and eliminate regulations. What to do about the housing situation? Get rid of new regulations that put restrictions on community lenders. Support Obama’s executive order to stop deporting young illegal immigrants who are in school? The couple wouldn’t say what they thought about the policy itself, just that they thought Obama should have first run it through Congress.

“The process is a big deal,” Connie Mack, who is a scheduled speaker at this week’s convention, said of Obama’s order. “The President continues to go around the people.”

Atwater, meanwhile was asked why he thought Gov. Rick Scott was so unpopular in the state. Atwater said he thinks Scott angered a small portion of people with his spending cuts but hasn’t been able to get out his “story” of reducing taxes and spending in the state.

“Rick Scott is going to do just fine in the state of Florida,” he said. Asked if Scott would run for re-election, Atwater said, “You bet he is. And we’re all behind him.”

The luncheon, part of Republican National Convention’s official roster of events, was sponsored by Bloomberg News and the Tampa Bay Host Committee.
