McCain: Obama wasn't calling Palin a 'pig' ...

Pig_out Asked this morning if he thinks Barack Obama was calling Sarah Palin a "pig" with his lipstick remark, Sen. John McCain flatly replied, "No."

"But I know he chooses his words carefully and it was the wrong thing to say," McCain told reporters on his bus in Jacksonville. (a pool recording was provided to the Times.) He stood by ads that criticized Obama. "I didn't like it, so we responded. .. We're not going to let attacks go unresponded to."

The ugliness could have been avoided, McCain said. "I have said consistently from the moment I knew I had the nomination ... let's do town hall meetings. It will change the entire tone of the campaign. Let's go to Jacksonville have our friends in the media select 400 people or 500 people, let's stand there the two of us and respond to their questions. He has refused ... I think America would be well served if we stood on the stage together."
