McCollum wants power to stop abusive debt collectors
UPDATED: Attorney General Bill McCollum is asking the Legislature for more authority to rein in rogue debt collectors, another move in a still-brewing feud with his Democratic rival for governor, Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink.
McCollum drafted legislative language, sent Tuesday in a letter to House Speaker Larry Cretul and Senate President Jeff Atwater, to make it easier to file civil lawsuits against abusive debt collectors by deeming the tactics an inherent violation of Florida law. He and Sink have bickered about who regulates the collectors after an Orlando Sentinel story shed light on the issue. Earlier in the morning, by 23 minutes, Sink's office sent a press releasing proposing four reforms to the way debt collector complaints are handled and possible penalties.
