McKay vouchers expansion rolls through Senate

With a 28-9 vote, a proposal to grow the McKay Scholarship Program for students with disabilities cleared the Florida Senate Monday morning. A House vote is expected later today before the bill goes to Gov. Rick Scott.

Sen. Eleanor Sobel, D-Hollywood, spoke against the proposal, raising some of the same criticism raised during committee hearings: that too many students would now qualify as disabled under the new plan.

"I'm a supporter of the McKay Scholarship for students who have severe learning disabilities," said Sobel, a former Broward school board member. "But I believe this bill goes a little too far in extending the McKay scholarship to students who may have peanut allergies, may have asthma temporarily, may have diabetes that can be controlled in the traditional calassroom setting...It takes money away as well from the traditional classroom."

McKay told us earlier this legislative session that he supports the expansion to his namesame program.
