Message switch: 7 legislators who told Scott to withdraw now want him elected
What a difference a month makes. Of the dozens of campaign co-chairs Republican Rick Scott touted in his press statement last night, seven of them were among a list of legislators who called on him just a month ago to release his "secret" testimony in the Solantic case or "withdraw from the race" because "you will become a liability."
Scott continues to refuse to release the testimony.
"We ask that you release your deposition and all documents related to and concerning lawsuits against Solantic in order to provide the transparency the public wants and deserves,'" wrote Sen. Joe Negron, Reps. Clay Ford, Alan Hays, Dave Murzin, Scott Plakon, Trudi Williams and Ritch Workman on Aug. 10
"By keeping your involvement in this case shrouded in secrecy, you will become a major liability for Republican candidates on this year's ballot if your campaign is successful. If you remain unwilling to release these materials and answer questions on these issues, we believe you should immediately withdraw from the race for the good of our party and the conservative cause in Florida."
Here's the full letter sent to Scott and the Scott campaign's response:
Here's the letter:
August 10, 2010
Rick Scott
300 S.E. 2nd Street, Suite 850
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301
Dear Mr. Scott,
As Republicans, we believe this election year is shaping up to be one of the most critical for our party in history. The policies of the Obama Administration have generated one of the largest movements against big-government we have ever seen. As the Party of less government, lower taxes and more personal and economic freedom, we believe the Republicans are well-positioned for success in November.
Recently, it has come to our attention that just six days before you announced your candidacy for governor, you were deposed over allegations amounting to criminal and fraudulent activity at Solantic, a company you founded and operate. Instead of being forthcoming about your role in the case, it appears you worked behind the scenes to prevent this deposition from reaching the public view. As state legislators with an interest in building on our party’s success over the past 12 years, we are concerned your refusal to be upfront with the public in this case could severely jeopardize your chances of becoming governor should you win the Republican gubernatorial primary.
We ask that you release your deposition and all documents related to and concerning lawsuits against Solantic in order to provide the transparency the public wants and deserves. By keeping your involvement in this case shrouded in secrecy, you will become a major liability for Republican candidates on this year’s ballot if your campaign is successful. If you remain unwilling to release these materials and answer questions on these issues, we believe you should immediately withdraw from the race for the good of our party and the conservative cause in Florida.
Please understand our concerns are not about politics. As Republicans, we want to nominate strong candidates who can unite our party and deliver a decisive victory over the Democrats and the Obama agenda this fall. In the spirit of openness and transparency, we hope you will comply with our request, release all relevant information and demonstrate your role in this case is minimal.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Scott Plakon
