Miami judge strikes down gay adoption ban
Circuit Judge Cindy Lederman in Miami today struck down Florida's long-standing ban against gays and lesbians adopting children. The case involves Frank Martin Gill, 54, of North Miami, who is seeking to adopt two foster children, according to the Family Equality Council, an advocacy group in Boston. (Gays and lesbians can be foster parents in Florida, but they cannot legally adopt children).
The state must now decide whether to appeal Lederman's decision to the Florida Supreme Court. Gov. Charlie Crist said he has just learned of the decision and offered no immediate reaction. "I just heard about it. I don't even know which judge. So after I get a chance to get briefed by (general counsel) Jason Gonzalez, I'll get back with you."
