For Miami lawmaker under pressure, a birthday song on the House floor
Maybe this will help lift his spirits after a couple of rough days: The members of the Florida House just sang "Happy Birthday" to Rep. Frank Artiles on the chamber floor.
Artiles, of course, is the Miami Republican taking heat for not living in his district more than five months after he was elected.
His 38th birthday is Friday. But the House is not in session tomorrow. So Rep. Daphne Campbell, D-Miami, led her colleagues in song at the end of session Thursday. Artiles, looking a little beaten down, stood up, smiled, and hugged fellow members of the Miami-Dade delegation.
House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, said he wouldn't comment on the Artiles case because it's a matter that could come before the House. If a complaint is filed, it will initially be handled by House Rules Chairman Gary Aubuchon, R-Cape Coral.
No complaint. No investigation.
"We certainly don't take action based on blog entries," Cannon said. "From what I understand, he's expressed some willingness to correct his violation. And it wouldn't be proper for me to comment on the details."
He said the GOP-run House would show no favoritism because Artiles is a Republican.
