Michael Steele's 'Fire Pelosi' tour rolls through Tampa Bay
RNC chairman Michael Steele brings his "Fire Pelosi" bus tour to the Tampa Bay area today. First stop: The Hillsborough County Republican Party Victory Office near downtown Tampa. Steele whipped up a crowd of about 100 people with his call to elect Republicans to Congress to neutralize Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic majority. Steele briefly shared the stage with Mike Prendergrast, who hopes to defeat Rep. Kathy Castor in November, and Dennis Ross, who wants to replace Republican Adam Putnam, now running to be Florida's Commissioner of Agriculture. "This is the new generation of Republican leadership," Steele said. "Your only requirement is to get them to win." Steele also gave a shout-out to Rick Scott and Marco Rubio, prompting chants of "Marco! Marco! Marco!"
Steele's 15-minute speech focused on reining in government spending and entitlements, asking small business owners if they thought to themselves today, "You know what, this profit thing is way overrated." And workers, he asked "When you got up this morning did you look in the mirror and say to yourself, 'All I want is to be dependent.' It's not in your DNA." Steele encouraged the crowd to knock on doors, make phone calls, wave signs and do anything else they can to get Republicans elected to national, state and local offices. "As you leave here, think about what you're going to do next next," he said. "There are countless numbers of people out there counting on you, counting on you to make it happen." The big red "Fire Pelosi" bus will make stops later today in Clearwater and St. Petersburg.
