Mmm Possum

5

August

It  seems that how far you are ahead in the polls is inversely related to how much time you spend at the Wausau Possum Festival.

CFO candidate Randy Johnson, U.S. Senate candidate Katherine Harris, gubernatorial candidates Tom Gallagher and Rod Smith all bid and "won" a possum each in the charity auction. (Click on highlighted names below for photos). Their opponents, all of whom are leading in the polls, either didn't show or didn't stay very long.

Johnson got one for $450. His primary opponent Tom Lee didn't show.

Harris won one for $400. Incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson appeared in the possum parade but skipped the auction.

Gallagher paid $475 for his possum. Charlie Crist placed a few bids on possums but left empty-handed before the auction was over.

And Smith, the lone Democrat running for state office who bid, waited until the end, when most of his competition had already won their possums, and scored one for just $250. Jim Davis didn't go. (Davis did go last year, when Smith skipped.)

The exception? Charles Bronson, the incumbent running for commissioner of agriculture. He's ahead of his challenger and got his possum for $475.
