Nelson and Rubio vote to ban insider trading, earmarks; differ on term limits

Florida Sens. Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio joined almost all of their colleagues today in passing a measure that would ban stock transactions by members of Congress or their aides based upon inside information. The Stop Trading On Congressional Knowledge Act heads to the House, where represenatitives too are eager to show the public they are cleaning up their act. Public approval of Congress is at an all-time low.

The Senate failed to enact a permanent ban on earmarks, which was offered as an amendment to the STOCK Act. Nelson and Rubio both voted for the ban, which failed 40-59. Nelson has defended earmarks in the past but is running for re-election.

Another amendment would have called for a constitutional amendment in favor of Congressional term limits. It failed, 24-75. Rubio voted for the term limits; Nelson did not.
